About me

A life dedicated to the soil

Dr. Marcelo Batista

My career is built on the integration of science, teaching, research and hands-on experience in agribusiness — with work dedicated to soil fertility, fertilization management, plant nutrition and efficiency in the use of fertilizers.

I completed my degree in Agronomy at the State University of Maringá and, shortly afterwards, my master's. In 2004 I joined COAMO Agroindustrial Cooperative as an agronomist — an experience that put me in direct contact with the challenges faced by those working in the field. Then came the doctorate and a period of study at The Ohio State University, in the United States.

In 2010 I joined the permanent faculty at UEM, where I teach Soil Fertility, Fertilizers and Fertilization, and Plant Nutrition at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Today I am also Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Agronomy and a CNPq Research Productivity Fellow.

From 2012 onwards I extended my work beyond the university: talks, courses and training for agronomists, technical teams, consultants and farmers, as well as the agronomic evaluation and validation of products, technologies and fertilizers.

Since 2013 I have supervised master's students and, since 2015, doctoral candidates — 11 doctorates and 17 master's degrees completed so far, alongside 84 published scientific papers. Many of these researchers now work across different segments of agribusiness.

What guides my work is that combination: scientific grounding, field experience and an understanding of the sector's real demands. I did not stay only in the classroom — I worked in the field as an agronomist before becoming a professor, and that is what allows me to turn technical knowledge into practical decisions.
